Dry mouth on GLP-1 medications

A dry, sticky mouth is a frequent complaint in GLP-1 forums, yet most product documents never mention it. This article sets out which US, European and Canadian documents do, how often dry mouth was reported against placebo, what reports gathered after approval add, how fluid loss and other medicines fit in, and which signs mean the dryness needs attention the same day.

What the labels and official product information say

Every US prescribing information has an adverse reactions section that reports what trial participants experienced more often on the medicine than on placebo. Of the GLP-1 labels discussed on this site, only Zepbound® (tirzepatide) and Saxenda® (liraglutide) mention dry mouth there [1][3]. We did not find it in the US Mounjaro® or Wegovy® labels, or in the Ozempic® product information in the EU [6][7][8].

Outside the US, two more documents add detail. Health Canada’s Zepbound® monograph breaks the figure down by dose [2], and the Canadian Trulicity® (dulaglutide) monograph places dry mouth among its less common trial reactions without a rate [5].

  • The gaps are small. On Zepbound®, roughly one extra person in a hundred noticed dryness compared with placebo [1].
  • Saxenda® adolescents: the separate table from the trial in 12 to 17 year olds lists reactions seen in at least 3% of users, and dry mouth is not among them [3].
  • Mounjaro® and Zepbound® contain the same molecule but their labels describe different trials: diabetes studies for Mounjaro®, weight-reduction studies for Zepbound® [1][6]. Neither label explains why one lists dry mouth and the other does not.

Reports gathered after approval

The US Food and Drug Administration collects voluntary reports of suspected side effects. A 2025 analysis of these reports for ear, nose and throat problems found that semaglutide was reported with dry mouth more often than expected compared with other medicines, alongside taste and smell changes [9]. This kind of analysis, called disproportionality or pharmacovigilance research, can raise a question but cannot show cause: who reports, and why, is not controlled.

A 2026 short review in an oral medicine journal pulled together case reports, pharmacovigilance findings and laboratory work. It lists dry mouth, reduced saliva, altered taste and burning sensations among the oral effects described with GLP-1 medicines and tirzepatide, and stresses that the evidence is limited and largely indirect [10].

Why the mouth may feel dry

  • Supported by the labels: nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which the labels link to kidney injury [1][3]. The EU Saxenda® information lists dehydration as uncommon and more likely at the start of treatment [4]. MedlinePlus counts dehydration among the causes of a dry mouth [11].
  • Proposed but not measured in people: the 2026 review suggests that GLP-1 signalling could affect the cells in salivary glands that make saliva, or the nerves that control them [10]. No trial has measured saliva flow on these medicines.
  • General knowledge: a dry mouth often comes from other medicines, from breathing through the mouth, from stress or anxiety, or from conditions such as diabetes and Sjögren syndrome [11][13].

Other things that can dry the mouth

MedlinePlus lists many prescription and over-the-counter medicines that reduce saliva, including antihistamines, decongestants and medicines for blood pressure, anxiety, depression, pain, asthma and epilepsy [11]. People who start a GLP-1 medicine often take several of these already, so a full medicine list matters more than a guess about which one is to blame.

Health problems can play a part too. MedlinePlus and NIDCR, the US dental research institute, name diabetes, Sjögren disease, HIV, nerve injury and radiation or chemotherapy for cancer [11][13]. Breathing through the mouth, alcohol, tobacco and caffeine can all add to dryness [11][12]. NIDCR points out that a dry mouth is not a normal part of getting older [13].

What may ease a dry mouth

MedlinePlus and NIDCR describe simple steps: sip water or other fluids through the day and with meals, chew sugar-free gum or suck sugar-free sweets to get saliva flowing, breathe through the nose where you can, and use a humidifier at night [11][12][13]. They also suggest cutting back on caffeine, alcohol, alcohol-based mouthwash and tobacco [11].

For eating, MedlinePlus mentions soft, moist foods and taking a drink with meals [11]. Artificial saliva sprays and rinses made for dry mouth are sold without a prescription; ask a pharmacist which suits you and whether it fits with your other medicines [11][12].

Because saliva protects teeth, brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing and regular dental visits matter more when the mouth stays dry [11][12]. Do not stop or change your GLP-1 medicine because of a dry mouth without talking to your prescriber; when a medicine is the cause, MedlinePlus says any change is for your provider to suggest [12].

Where the related questions are covered

Brand pages such as Zepbound® and dry mouth, Mounjaro® and dry mouth and Saxenda® and dry mouth go through each label in more detail. Effects on teeth and gums are covered in the dental article, and changes in how food tastes have their own page on dysgeusia, so this page does not repeat them.

Questions

Does Mounjaro cause dry mouth?

The US Mounjaro® label does not list it [6]. The Zepbound® label, which contains the same tirzepatide, reports a dry mouth or throat in 1% of people against 0.1% on placebo in its weight trials [1]. The Mounjaro® brand page covers this in more depth.

Is a dry throat the same side effect?

The Zepbound® label counts dry mouth and dry throat together [1]. MedlinePlus lists a dry feeling in the throat among the usual symptoms of a dry mouth [12].

Can a dry mouth mean I am not drinking enough?

It can. MedlinePlus lists dehydration as one cause [11], and the labels warn that vomiting and diarrhea can lead to fluid loss [1][3]. If dryness comes with those symptoms or you are drinking much less than usual, call your prescriber.

Can a dry mouth affect my teeth?

Yes. With too little saliva, acid-producing bacteria can increase, raising the risk of cavities, gum disease and thrush [11][13]. The dental article on this site looks at teeth on GLP-1 medicines in more detail.

Could another medicine be causing it?

Often. MedlinePlus lists antihistamines, decongestants and medicines for blood pressure, anxiety, depression and pain, among others [11]. Bring a full list to your pharmacist rather than stopping anything yourself.

My older parent on a GLP-1 says their mouth is always dry. Is that just age?

NIDCR says a dry mouth is not a normal part of aging [13]. MedlinePlus explains that older adults tend to take more medicines and have more conditions that cause it [11], so it is worth raising with their clinician.
