What the Rybelsus® documents say
Dry mouth does not appear in any Rybelsus® side-effect list. One nearby entry is easy to misread: the Canadian trial table includes dry eye, reported by 1.7% on 7 mg, none on 14 mg and 0.3% on placebo [3]. That is the eye, not the mouth.

What reports and studies describe
A 2022 analysis of US FDA reports for semaglutide in any form counted 74 reports of dry mouth, but rated the signal weak [4]. A 2025 study of the same database across several GLP-1 medicines found a significant signal for dry mouth with semaglutide, along with altered taste and loss of smell [5].
A 2023 case series described three women, aged 27 to 46, who developed markedly reduced saliva after a mean of about 11 weeks of semaglutide for weight loss; after other causes were excluded, management ranged from stopping the drug to symptomatic care, and saliva flow returned to acceptable levels [6]. A 2026 narrative review found dry mouth to be the most consistently reported oral effect of semaglutide, often following stomach symptoms, reduced eating and drinking, and slowed stomach emptying [7].
None of these sources separates tablets from injections. Reports and case series can raise a question; they cannot show how often dry mouth occurs on Rybelsus® or that the tablet causes it.
Why the mouth might feel dry
- Label-supported: dehydration. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea can cause fluid loss, which the US label links to acute kidney injury [1]. MedlinePlus lists a dry or sticky mouth, thirst and darker urine among signs of mild to moderate dehydration [9].
- Plausible, from the review: drinking and eating less while appetite is low, which the 2026 review links to dry mouth [7]. Decreased appetite was reported by 9.0% on 14 mg against 0.8% on placebo [3].
- Proposed, not proven: a 2025 review suggests GLP-1 receptors in salivary glands could be involved, but this comes from mechanistic and report data rather than clinical trials [8].
Other common causes
MedlinePlus and NIDCR list many causes unrelated to semaglutide [9][10][11]:
- Diabetes itself, as well as high blood sugar that makes you pass more urine.
- Other medicines, especially some used for high blood pressure, depression and bladder control.
- Breathing through the mouth, and alcohol or tobacco use.
- Conditions such as Sjögren’s disease, and nerve damage or radiation affecting the salivary glands.
What general sources suggest
MedlinePlus and NIDCR suggest drinking water through the day and sipping water or a sugarless drink with meals, avoiding caffeine, alcohol and tobacco, using a humidifier at night, and choosing sugarless gum or hard candy to stimulate saliva [10][11]. Gum is a trade-off: NIDDK notes that it also makes you swallow more air, which can add to burping, so it may not suit everyone on Rybelsus® [12]. Because dry mouth raises the risk of tooth decay and mouth infections, both sources stress brushing, flossing and regular dental visits.
If a medicine seems to be the cause, they say a clinician or dentist may adjust treatment or suggest a saliva substitute [10][11]; do not stop Rybelsus® on your own, as the European leaflet notes your blood sugar may rise [2].
The tablet’s water rule and the first half hour
Each morning’s tablet is swallowed before food with a small amount of plain water, at most about 120 mL (4 ounces), followed by a gap of at least 30 minutes before any meal, drink or other tablet [1]. The Canadian monograph explains that a larger volume of water, or a shorter wait, is likely to lower the amount of semaglutide absorbed [3]. A dry mouth on waking is therefore best eased before the tablet or after the 30 minutes, not with an extra glass alongside it.
The rest of the day has no such limit: the Medication Guide asks you to drink fluids to reduce the chance of dehydration [1], and to tell your provider right away if nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea does not go away.
